What’s in Your Hands?

Moses had now become an ordinary shepherd, on his normal daily work of looking after his father in law’s flock. I guess he was happy and comfortable in his new life. He had no palace roles to do, no guards around him all day and night. He was enjoying the freedom of life outside the palace. It had been a long time since he had run away from Egypt.

In his comfort zone God showed up and spoke to Him, He commissioned him to return to Egypt and bring out the children of Israel from slavery. But Moses wasn’t sure how he could assure the Israelites that God had sent him. Moses was in doubt about his qualification and ability, and so God asks him a simple question, “what is in your hands?”. He had a staff.

Maybe Moses had carried this staff every single day since he started tending the flock of his father in law. It was just an ordinary staff which he used for ordinary things like supporting himself up a hill or leading the flock in the right path. Whatever job he used the staff for it was very ordinary to Moses. God loves to use the ordinary things to do the extraordinary things. What’s in your hands? What do you think is very ordinary in your life? Is it your job? Is it family, giftings, ears to listen to someone, a mouth to speak? Is it the strength you have to help carry something? Is it a writing skill? What do you have? Can you pray? Can you encourage? Can you hug? Can you smile? What can you do? Are you available? It’s not about our ability, PHDs or big qualifications, though they are helpful. God sometimes uses the very weak things so that He can display His splendour and glory. He uses whatever you offer Him, and can transform it into a tool for His miracles.

Moses had a staff but did not have any ability to change the staff into a serpent. His staff was made available and God used it to do that. By saying yes to God and making yourself available to do whatever His will is, He is glorified. He isn’t necessarily interested in our ability but our availability. Maybe today you can bless someone in a simple way. Maybe you can give someone a smile to lighten their day. Maybe a word of encouragement can lift someone’s spirit, maybe a song you sing can restore joy into someone’s anguish. Today, what’s in your hands?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I know I sometimes don’t really see what’s in my hand that can be used for Your glory. Please open my eyes today to see. Open my ears to hear. Help me know how to surrender and make available whatever You have given me, to glorify Your name. I give You my ability, strength, gifts, and everything that I have, to use today for Your honour. Amen.
