The Wedding Day of the Warrior Prince

You are the most excellent of men and your lips have been anointed with grace, since God has blessed you forever. Gird your sword upon your side, O mighty one; clothe yourself with splendour and majesty. In your majesty ride forth victoriously on behalf of truth, humility and righteousness.
Psalm 45:2-4, NIV

This psalm is A Wedding Song. A warrior Prince preparing for his wedding day. What a hero Prince he is, noble, just, fighting for truth and right – and doing it all with grace and humility!

He has elaborately prepared for this day, ‘All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from palaces adorned with ivory The music of the strings makes you glad’ (verse 8).

The bride emerges with her bridesmaids in stately procession, to meet the groom. Her dress is weighed down with its pure gold, interwoven thread, and dazzling, gold-encrusted embroidery.

We don’t know who this bride is, who are her parents or what is their status. It’s all irrelevant. This bride is adored by the King’s son and he has chosen her. That’s all that matters. He can marry whomever he wishes and, as she enters his family and is honoured and adored by him, she takes his status.

The book of Hebrews tells us that this Song is all about Jesus (Hebrews 1:9), our Warrior Prince. I sometimes feel that we see Jesus as baby, as teacher, as man of sorrows, dying on the cross. We see Him as warrior, great and glorious in His ascension and His authority. But this song is about His personal love, His personal delight and personal relationship, His life in His family. It is about the Church, about the bride of this Warrior, about the bride whom He adores, His personal delight and passion. The bride is urged to leave all her previous life behind. ‘Listen, O daughter, consider and give ear; forget your people and your father’s house. The king is enthralled with your beauty; honour him for he is your lord’ (Psalm 45:10-11).

The standing of the King is everything – and He adores His church. He has picked us out. We are the reason why His robes are fragrant with spices. We are the reason why the musicians are tuning up, ready for the dancing in his ivory palaces. He is coming very soon to find His bride – us, His church. He’s longing to find us ready for him when He comes.

Prayer: Thank You Jesus, that You are our Warrior Prince and that You passionately love us, Your Bride. Holy Spirit, will You speak this love right into our inner beings that we might be ready and longing for Your coming again, ready for You. Amen.
