It’s never too late!
by David Cross
I was recently asked to speak a word of encouragement to some of the older members of a church fellowship. The pastor was concerned that many seemed apathetically resigned to being replaced by the younger members of the Body of Christ. I thought of Caleb.
He was a very remarkable man, described by God as having ‘a different spirit’ from those around him. Only he and Joshua made it into the Promised Land because they refused to be intimidated by the giants opposing the children of Israel. After a wait of forty years Caleb was still ready and willing to fulfil his personal destiny. At eighty-five years of age, he was determined to battle against the giants and claim the inheritance which God had promised to him and his family.
Hopefully most of us who are senior members of the church will not be called into a physical war, but we should be the best equipped troops for the spiritual battle. Our long walk with Jesus and our experience of the enemy’s tactics should make our intercession before God and our confrontation with the powers of darkness highly effective, if we remain faithful followers of the Commander of the Lord’s army. Our destiny is fulfilled as much through who we are as through what we do.
Caleb was a man who trusted God more than he feared man. Within a short time he had not only displaced the giants from their high ground, but he had also secured an everlasting inheritance for his family. We may not have quite the physical strength of Caleb but there’s still plenty of time to seek God’s direction, agree with His battle plan and complete the destiny that He has purposed for us on earth. We each have a responsibility to play our part in establishing a secure spiritual inheritance for those that will come after us. Let’s not miss God’s best both for ourselves and for them!
Prayer: Thank you Lord that however old (or young) I am, there is always a place for me to serve in the Lord's army! In Jesus' name, Amen.
