The fear of the Lord – that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.
Job 28:28, NIV

I felt led to read Job 28 and was amazed as it spoke of wisdom.

Where we live in Western Australia the economy is held up by the mining of different minerals and resources, making Australia, particularly Western Australia, quite wealthy. In Job 28 it speaks of all the wealth mined from the earth, but how wisdom is much more precious than any of the valuable things which come from the earth. In fact it goes on to say 'where can wisdom be found and where does understanding dwell?' (Job 28:12). The following verses say that no precious stones or finest gold can buy wisdom, and it’s all summed up in the last verse which says that wisdom comes by 'fearing the Lord'.

As I pondered on this, thinking about my own finances and how it would all seem easier if there was more income, I realised that those who follow Jesus, and obey and fear Him, have much more than those in the world, who may be wealthy but live a meaningless existence, without hope or truth.

I felt God was saying we must keep our eyes fixed on Him, trusting Him (which is fearing Him), and all things will work out for good. It’s easy to let circumstances and lack of finance pull us down; to not trust God, but go into ungodly fear. That’s not wisdom. I love how God always speaks to us through His Word when we’re going through things, and He brings His light and truth to us, because He cares for us.

Let's be encouraged to fear the Lord; that is to hold Him in awe, and be obedient to Him, being wise to keep trusting Him in all circumstances.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word that brings encouragement and hope. Help us to fear You and not come under ungodly fear which steals our peace and hope. Please help us to keep our eyes firmly fixed on You and Your goodness, so that we will have wisdom and understanding in all circumstances. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
