Seeds of the Kingdom

Under His Wing

by Lynda Scott

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent.
Psalm 91:9-10, NIV

I’ve had a challenging month. I went to the doctor with a niggling feeling I should have a checkup. The doctor ordered some tests, at which point I was fairly calm about the whole thing. Initially one of the blood tests came up with abnormalities. Further tests were ordered. Once again I was fairly calm. But then I went to the doctor to get the results of one of the scans. There were distinct abnormalities and the possibility of cancer. That wasn’t what I was expecting to hear. My ears perked up and my heart started to race a little. Next I had to have biopsies, and then endure a week of waiting for the results to come back to the doctor. Lots of questions flooded my mind. Did I have cancer? Was there major surgery coming up? Would I be okay? What about my husband and children?

During that week I listened to a lot of worship music. But on one of those days, as I was reading the Bible, I came across Psalm 91. When I’ve been in particularly difficult circumstances over the years I find I consciously draw near to God. I think of His everlasting wings, as described in Psalm 91, and I think of being like a baby chick drawing into that safe place, where His wings shelter me and provide refuge. It’s been in that place where He’s held me. It’s a place where, in my spirit, I feel safe, as well as at peace, when in the natural sense there is no peace. I received my results early this week and the biopsies all returned benign. Thank You, Lord. However I still need to see a specialist and be assessed further in these coming few weeks. But a load lifted from me.

Truly I can say ‘The Lord is my refuge’ and I do make the ‘Most High’ my dwelling. So in the midst of what I have to face I won’t be afraid. When I was at church last week, before I received my results, the Holy Spirit whispered His reassurance to me “Don’t be afraid, I’m with you.” His word makes all the difference.

Today you may be facing uncertainty or illness and be wondering how you’re going to come through. Make the Lord your dwelling, draw under His wings and let Him provide you with refuge. It’s the most wonderful place to be. Meditate on Psalm 91. I also believe the Holy Spirit is speaking to you today saying, “Don’t be afraid, I’m with you.”

Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank You that You’re with me in all the things I’m currently facing. I’m so grateful for Your place of safe refuge. Please help me. May the healing balm of Your Holy Spirit touch my body. Once again I trust my life into Your safe and loving hands. Amen.
