Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:6, NIV

These days we hear many things presented as truth. Many people have completely opposite ideas of what the truth is on any subject. Depending on which website you visit, or which news presenter you watch, you will hear different things presented as truth. We can find ourselves wondering what is really true. Is there real truth anywhere? Maybe we pick which one we like, and we decide that is truth. However, we can be easily deceived.

God has been impressing on my heart the importance of knowing the truth. As I pondered this and asked Him about it, today’s scripture came to my mind. Jesus told His disciples that He is the truth! So, when we want to know the truth, we need to know Jesus. How do we do that?

When I want to get to know someone, I spend time with them. I talk to them. I learn what they like, and what they don’t like. I read the letters that they write to me. I might talk about them with other people who know them.

As I was thinking about spending time with Jesus, I was reminded of the ‘Study Tour of Israel’ that we got to go on last year. There were twenty of us in the group. Some people I knew a little, others I knew more, and some I didn’t know at all before the trip. As we spent time travelling together and experiencing things together, we got to know each other very well, and our love for each other grew.

Sometimes we think that it is in our quiet times, when we are praying and reading the Bible, that we are spending time with Him. That is true. But if we think about Him as we go through our normal daily life, and talk to Him about things we are doing, our relationship with Him will grow exponentially, just as it did with those of us who travelled together.

In John 8:31-32 we read, ‘To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ From this, we can see that part of knowing the truth is also to hold to Jesus’ teaching.

May we all grow in knowing Jesus as the Truth! We will need this truth even more in the days to come.
