The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Psalm 19:1, NIV

The Lord gives us a rainbow to remind us of His promises and, with an array of beauty and colour dotted on a firmament canvas, He showcases His greatness in the skies at different times, on different days, and in different places. In countries located closer to the poles, there is a spectacular phenomenon called the Aurora Borealis/Australis, more commonly known as the Northern/Southern Lights or polar lights.

These majestic displays vary in colour and intensity, normally in shades of green, with hints of pink, red or white, and are fascinating to behold. Watching a video online recently, I was struck by how vibrant the colours were and I was also struck by how the movement of the these electrically charged particles look at times like a celestial curtain or garment billowing in the night sky.

It made me think of the awesomeness of the Lord displayed in His creation, and yet how He is so interested and concerned with you and me. Sometimes we can feel like the woman with the issue of blood, battling with something for a long time, and wondering when breakthrough will come. We can perhaps feel, at times, that God doesn’t care or has forgotten about us.

As I watched this video of the Northern Lights with this colourful, billowing garment-like phenomenon, I was reminded of that precious woman in Scripture, who, in her desperation, after years of suffering, pressed in close to Jesus, believing if she could just touch the hem of His garment, she’d be healed.

The Lord Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever and He is our healer, our protector and our comforter. Matthew 9:20-21 (KJV) says, ‘And behold a woman which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of His garment. For she said within herself, If I may but touch His garment, I shall be (made) whole’. And she was.

In this time of global unsettledness, with COVID-19 making ripples everywhere, let’s ‘touch’ the hem of His garment, welcome His presence and allow Him to bring us healing, peace, comfort and hope.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You that I can give You my struggles, my doubts and my fears. I choose this day to press into You, to touch the hem of Your garment, and experience Your healing touch. Even when I don’t sense Your presence, I choose to believe You are there. I thank You that You promise to never leave me or forsake me. Thank You that You love me and care so deeply for me. Help me keep my eyes on You, fill me with Your peace and help me to share Your love and comfort with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
