SUPERHERO

by Christel Baxter

“But He stands alone, and who can oppose Him?”
Job 23:13, NIV

My 23 year old son loves superhero movies. Even though he is now an adult, he still gets quite excited whenever there is a new superhero movie being released. Listening to the radio this morning, the latest Superman vs. Batman movie was being reviewed, and it suddenly hit me: God is THE Superhero of superheroes!

The Bible describes God and His actions in very exciting and colourful ways. It uses “superhero- language.” Here are a few examples:

“He draws the horizon out over the ocean, sets a boundary between light and darkness. Thunder crashes and rumbles in the skies. Listen! It’s God raising his voice! By His power He stills sea storms, by His wisdom He tames sea monsters. With one breath He clears the sky, with one finger He crushes the sea serpent. And this is only the beginning, a mere whisper of His rule. Whatever would we do if He really raised His voice!” – Job 26:10-14 (MSG)

“There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, Who rides across the heavens to help you and on the clouds in His majesty.” – Deuteronomy 33:26

“…Sing praise to the Lord, to Him Who rides across the highest heavens, the ancient heavens, who thunders with mighty voice. Proclaim the power of God…Whose power is in the heavens.” - Psalm 68:32-34

“…and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man…His eyes like a flame of fire; His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.” - Revelation 1:13-16

“They shall walk after the Lord. He will roar like a lion. When He roars, then His sons shall come trembling from the west…” - Hosea 11:10

There are many more passages of Scripture that speaks of God’s majesty, His beauty, His power and His unfathomable greatness. He is a Mighty Warrior Who is able to slay His enemy by the breath of His mouth. He is strong, and able, and beyond understanding. “He stands alone…” And yet, He is kind, and compassionate, rich in mercy and love. He comes to the rescue - riding across the heavens to help us when we need Him. He was humble enough to take on the fragile form of a limited human to demonstrate His absolute commitment and love to His creation. And He pursued me and drew me into relationship with Him. I am astounded and in awe of Him, and sold out to my “Superhero” God!

Prayer: Lord, I just love the fact that Your Word describes You in such beautiful and exciting detail! Thank you that You are Almighty and majestic, but also deeply interested in the things that concern me. Thank you for loving me and for drawing me into relationship with You. I love You, Lord! Amen.
