Remain in My Love

by Margaret Southey

As the Father has loved me so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.

You might think it improbable that Jesus would love you! Your personal experience may be that you haven’t been loved. In your heart you feel unloved and in your mind you believe that no one loves you.

What we have experienced in life influences what we believe. But our belief of what we think is true isn’t necessarily accurate. Our belief may be a long way from the truth.

If what we believe isn’t necessarily the truth, where do we find truth? In God’s Word, where Jesus says – ‘As the Father has loved me so have I loved you’.

God created us in love, and we remain in His love throughout our lives and for all eternity. He says ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love’ (Jeremiah 31:3). His love for us is not dependent on our success, looks, intelligence or anything else for that matter. This is the truth, however we may feel about it or whatever we believe.

Jesus says, ‘Remain in my love.’ We have the choice whether we act upon that instruction or not. If we choose to reject it, we’ll continue to believe the lie of the enemy that we’re unloved. We’ll feel unloved and behave as if we are unloved.

On the other hand we can come to Jesus and tell him we choose to receive His love, despite our feelings and what we believe. At first this may not result in us feeling loved, but as we keep on telling Jesus that we receive His love, He makes it become a reality. He can and will do it, because He told us to ‘remain’ in His love.

Our role is choosing to receive Jesus’ love. His role is to make that love a reality.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You know that sometimes I don’t feel or believe that I’m loved. I’m sorry that I have believed that You, together with people, have rejected me. I choose to receive Your love and to remain in it and I trust You to make Your love for me a reality. Amen.
