Jesus welcomed the people, taught them about the Kingdom of God and healed those in need. Luke 9:11

Going into this Retreat, I was close minded and didn't really think much of it, but healing happened from the minute I entered the Shere House gates. Thank you to Ellel for the wonderful experience..... Read More...

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
John 1:1, NIV

For all of you who really enjoy reading books, the first sentence is always the most difficult to write because it must set the stage for the rest of what follows. It is the doorway into the rest of the book. It has to invite and even entice the reader to pass through and read the rest. It is like the first impression you form when you meet someone new. That first impression tends to influence your attitude toward the individual and your desire to interact with them. As a result, the first sentence, the first paragraph, the first chapter of any book is very important.

This is also true of God’s Word. And in this case, God certainly achieves His purpose in a big way. Not only does the first sentence of God’s Word set the stage for everything that follows, but it is also the case that, without it, nothing else matters. If God is not the Creator of everything then He is not the One in control. That makes the first sentence of the Bible the most powerful, meaningful, most important sentence ever written. Yet it is also one of the most overlooked verses in the Word of God.

Why? Because amongst many things it addresses the order for this universe to exist.

`To do so, it requires three things to have come into existence simultaneously. They are space, time and matter. If there is matter and time but no space, where do I put anything? If there is space and time but no matter, what do I put into it? If there is space and matter but no time, when do I put anything? This is an evolutionary conundrum. The Bible has the answer right there in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” This tells us that in the beginning – time, God created the heavens – space. And the earth – matter` (Dr Kent Hovind).

This verse also tells us two important things. Firstly, with those first three words, `In the beginning God`, we are told who existed before the beginning. Matthew Mark and Luke start with the genealogy of Christ, while John goes back to the very start.

Secondly, we are told ‘how’ and that is through the fifth word ‘created`. It was done out of nothing. Evolutionists believe in the ‘Big Bang Theory’, but it was a divine act of the Creator God. So, God created everything out of nothing to a specific plan and design. You and I are part of that fantastic design.

This one simple verse tells us of the awesome power of God. Tonight, why don’t you step outside; look up at the sky full of stars and think of this verse. Look at all the life that surrounds you - your family, your friends, your pets, the plants in your yard, every insect and bird in your neighbourhood and think of this verse. God created it all. It is all there for our enjoyment because of a simple sentence “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
