Opened eyes

by Jim Person

But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know him.
Luke 24:16, NKJV

A while ago I had my eyes checked and was given a new prescription for lenses. Shortly after I had these new glasses I noticed my sight was blurred and I was having trouble seeing clearly. When I had my eyes rechecked I was told that I was given the wrong prescription. It made me think that just like me with my wrong prescription it’s possible to go through life with blurred vision, seeing but not perceiving, seeing with eyes that are restrained or kept from seeing correctly. We live in a fallen world. We can get grit in our eyes from the dirtiness of the world. It’s often for that reason we see in part and don’t fully see Jesus for who He is. But sometimes God hides things from our sight as He hid Jesus from the disciples on the Emmaus road (Luke 24:13-35). Either way, we don’t see as we should and need God to open our eyes and minds. We can walk along life’s road not recognising that it’s Jesus who’s walking besides us and speaking to us along the way, showing us truths if we could but see them.

As with the two disciples journeying along the road to Emmaus, we can receive the Word of God but still not see what’s there in front of us. Jesus wants to open our spiritual eyes as He did with them, so that we might fully comprehend the Scriptures and see with new understanding.

Let’s ask Jesus to give us a new holy vision so that our spiritual sight might be opened and we can see the Word with a new set of ‘opened eyes’.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to see, to really see. Lord, I sometimes see Your Scripture in part, because my vision is restrained from seeing correctly. Would You open my eyes, and clear my vision, so that I can fully see and understand all that You have for me? I want to have the eyes of my heart opened so I can understand and comprehend Your Scriptures and enter into Your truths revealed to me. Thank You, Jesus! Amen.
