It`s Not Fair!

by Tanya Person

Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my business? Are you jealous because I’m generous?
Matthew 20:15, HCSB

How often, as a mother of four, have I heard those words, "It`s not fair!" And, if I`m honest, I`ve said them myself way too often!

We have such a longing for justice, which in our minds means everything must be fair. But God`s justice is different from ours! In the parable in Matthew 20 the workers who were hired first agreed on a certain wage, but when the people who had only worked one hour were paid what the others were to receive, they thought they would get more! So when they got what they had agreed, they were jealous and said it wasn`t fair! It`s not that they didn`t receive a fair and just payment, but they compared it to the others and so were discontent.

The Bible teaches us we should be content with what we are given. I find in my life that when I see I have enough and see how God miraculously provides for all our needs every time, then I am content. It is only when I look at others and start to compare that I start to feel life is not fair.

We will find that we are happier and have more peace and contentment in our lives if we are not comparing. Let`s keep our eyes on Jesus, knowing He gives us what is just, and trust Him!

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the times I have compared what I`ve been given with what others have. Help me to be content and to understand Your justice. Most of all help me to trust You in all things. Amen.
