I’m Not a Formula
by Vivienne Hill
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
I am no gardener, as everyone who knows me knows. But there are many words in the Scriptures about plants and trees and flowers, and I do love Father’s creation.
As we spend time praying for people, one of the most wonderful things is the solid proof that Father God is at work. How do I know that? Because, just like the trees and plants He created, He deals with each one of us differently.
Although I am not a scientist, I would quite like to see a logical a + b = c answer to ministry. I would spend this amount of time, pray this prayer, and get this result. But I have learned over the years that this is not the answer. God is! Our God is the Creator. He has created some things in mathematics and science that do add up like that, but others that just do not. And I think we humans are at the top of the unpredictable list.
For instance, I could name at least two people who are struggling with similar situations at the moment. They are both dealing with it in their own way. Yet they are both coming closer to the Father as they walk through it. Both are dealing with very serious situations, not just small things. I can walk alongside them. I can encourage and love them through it. But I cannot ever experience what they are experiencing, because each one of us, created by Father, is totally unique.
Our uniqueness means that there is no quick formulaic answer. God is the only One who actually sent His son to live amongst us and to be sacrificed for us, so it’s all about relationship with Him as Father. If you are struggling with something today, don’t look inwards to find the solution from yourself, and don’t look outwards to those around you. Look up to the One who made you just as you are and loves you just as you are.
As I write this, I am being convicted that I don’t spend enough time walking and talking to Him. So, how about you? Do you agree with me today that you are unique, and that Father God loves you uniquely? If you can, will you take it one step further and spend more time just chatting to Him today? Remember He is our awesome God. Remember He is also your Father. Remember how much He loves you. And remember that you are unique.
Prayer: Father God, help me to see myself as Your unique creation. Help me to come into Your presence in my own unique way. Help me to spend more time with You today. I ask this in Your precious Son’s name. Amen.
