How Free Are You!

by Robert Steel

Then David danced before the Lord with all his might.
2 Samuel 6:14a, NKJV

Recently we had all the young people from our team come to enjoy a BBQ at our house. My son, who is 7 years old, loves to be creative and to entertain people, so he decided to set up a dance studio in his bedroom in case they wanted to do some dancing. He had made some signs to point the way and then said to me ‘come on, Daddy, lets have practice session’.

I followed him up stairs and he put on one of his children’s worship CDs and began to dance and worship God. He was dancing and lifting his arms in the air and shouting things out like ‘we love You, Jesus, You are the best’. He was so free to just express what was in his heart.

As I joined in with him, I looked out the window and thought, if people could see us I wonder what they would think, and I felt a little embarrassed. When I looked back at my son I realised how free he was to just express himself before God, having no concerns about who he was and what he was doing.

I was reminded of the verse above and how David danced before the Lord when he was bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. David was expressing himself freely and openly, having no concerns about the environment that surrounded him.

I wonder how many of us are too embarrassed or afraid to express ourselves freely before God, whether it’s at home, before our family, or in our church. Perhaps we need to ask ourselves ‘what is it in me that stops me from being free to express myself before God, and to be childlike before Him?`

God wants us to be free to express ourselves openly to Him, just like my son was, with no concerns about our whereabouts or who can see us.

Prayer: Father, forgive me where I’m unable to express myself fully before You. I ask that You would show me the areas in my life that stop from doing this, so I can bring them before You. Father, my desire is to worship You with a child-like faith, having no concerns of how I do this, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
