His Way is in the Whirlwind

by Fiona Horrobin

His Way is in the whirlwind and storm and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
The Lord is good, a stronghold in a day of trouble; he protects those who take refuge in him, even in a rushing flood.
Nahum 1:3b, New RSV

Our temptation, when we experience a storm or a flood in life, is to quake! Life brings with it many such events and as Christians we are not exempt from rough seas. We experience them in our relationships, our health, our workplace, and our churches and in our communities, as well as in today’s world situation.

God is shaking the nations today. What was once solid and safe ground is increasingly showing the signs of strain and meltdown. Man’s ability to fix it is running out and we are left to watch as those who are in power endeavour, in man’s way, to steer something which is in God’s hands.

What do we do and how do we react when the whirlwind and the storm rises up? The safest place in any storm is in the ‘eye’ - the place in the centre where peace reigns. This is the place of refuge that the Lord offers to us for protection. He is the ‘eye’ of the storm.

In the midst of all that is going on around us in the world, and all that may be raging around you personally, may we find the place in the centre for our refuge. God’s way is in the whirlwind and the storm! He is on the throne. He is in control and more than this, He is on the move and fulfilling His purposes.

Even in a rushing flood, He protects us and will be our stronghold. His strong arm moves upon us and holds us safe. The challenge for us is not to fight and wriggle but to stay still in this place of trust and safety. It is not a passive place but a place of courage and boldness in the storm, which is victorious over it.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I take up my position with You in the storms of life and in these days of Your shaking. I join with my brothers and sisters in Christ in holding on to you and watching You have your way in the nations. Amen.
