God’s Protection

by Joan Rono

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”
Psalm 91:1-2, NIV

This chapter of the Bible has been an inspiration to me. Every time I read it I experience a longing to not miss out on anything God has for me in my walk with Him. The word ‘dwell’ is more than just a visit once in a while. It’s a permanent state of being in a place. It’s making a home somewhere.

When we dwell in the secret place we’re coming into a place of His covering and protection, a safe hiding place. It’s a gentle and warm place too! It’s under His feathers and wings. When a hen puts a chick under its wings, it’s not only protected, but warm!

Psalm 91:9 says ‘If you make the most high your dwelling’. It’s our own personal choice. Do you want to come under His covering - a place where He is not only Lord, but Lord of all? If you only come halfway under an umbrella you’ll get wet. If you leave an arm out, you’ll get wet. But coming under His covering means you’re fully in!

Does that mean you’re immune to everything that happens? No. But it means when there are things happening in life you’re in a place of protection, and you’re assured of His covering. There’ll be fowler’s snares, and deadly pestilence, but you’ll be covered. There’ll be terrors of night and arrows in the day, but you won’t have to fear them. There’ll be pestilence and plagues, but they won’t touch you. Many may fall on either side of you, but whatever causes them to fall won’t come near you.

When things happen in life, it’ll be different. Because you’ve made the Lord your refuge, He takes it upon Himself to make sure of your safety. As you read to the end of Psalm 91 you’ll find His promises keep bringing reassurance. When God says ‘I will’ it’s very personal to Him. Your care and protection become His responsibility and not ours.

Do you want to be under His covering? Then you need to stay within His will and obey Him. That way you’ll ensure that you’re fully under His umbrella. You can chose to come out from under that covering, but outside God’s covering you’re exposed to anything the enemy can throw at you.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, please be Lord in the whole of my life. I commit myself to You, and come under Your covering. Shelter me under Your wings, O my refuge and strength. Forgive me when I’ve moved out of Your covering and sought my own protection. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
