Seeds of the Kingdom

Fruitfulness

by Joan Rono

For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not return there, But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater, So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

I was astounded thinking about how much time we spend taking care of our body, making it look presentable, when the truth is this body is just a vehicle for us while we’re here on earth. We spend hours looking after our bodies (which isn’t wrong), but sometimes we neglect the most important part of who we are, our spirit.

We need to nourish our spirit with spiritual food, we can’t starve our inner man. I believe that our human spirit’s eternal, but it can also get hungry. Jesus says, ‘blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness’.

God’s word is food and water for our spirit. As we take time to feed our spirit, we grow and bear fruit. Psalm 1 talks about the effect of meditation on God’s word. It’s fruitfulness. Fruitfulness in our Christian walk comes from feeding on God’s word, among other things.

We can starve our spirit by not feeding ourselves with the truth and nourishment we need. A starving spirit is a weak spirit.

Psalm 119 is the longest psalm, and all it talks about is God’s word. You can tell David was passionate about the word of God. It’s worth taking time to read through it.
Also, our spirit can be defiled and need cleansing. Just as we often need to clean our bodies, so we need to cleanse our spirit. We can feed our spirit with the wrong stuff. What we hear or see can defile us, and a defiled spirit is a sick spirit.

Jesus said to His disciples, “you are already clean through the words I have spoken to you”, but obedience and action are required to facilitate change in our day to day lives. We are firstly to rely on His word in our daily walk, and then obedience is what really grounds us. I see it like this, as we read and obey His word, our spiritual roots go deeper into Him and we become strong and fruitful.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I choose to take time to meditate on Your word. Please help me to spend time in the word, and be obedient, as You require of me. I want to be strong and fruitful in my day to day living. Teach me, Lord. Amen.
