to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
John 1:12, NIV

I’m sitting on a bench, overlooking Morecambe Bay, as I write this ‘Seed of the Kingdom’. A young father has just walked past, holding two small girls in each arm. They are dressed in ballerina costumes and seem very peaceful.

Behind them is another father, paddling in the water with his two children following close behind him. Every now and again he stops and looks around to ensure that they are safe. Sometimes he waits a minute or two so they can catch up. His strides are so big in comparison to their little steps, but they manage to stay close. All three are enjoying the blue sky and the water swelling around their bare feet.

Behind them is a lady holding the hand of a little boy as they walk side by side through the sand. They are leaving two sets of footprints behind them as they walk. Neither appear to be speaking very much, and perhaps they don’t need to. To be in each other’s company is more than enough. Each of the parents I have just described has a unique way of relating to their children, just as God has a unique way of relating to each of us. As I watch and ponder I get a further glimpse of God’s heart towards me. He knows exactly what I need, and reaches out to me accordingly.

Sometimes I need my Heavenly Father to hold me close and carry me, just like the first father did with his two, small girls. Other times I am content to follow a few feet behind Him, knowing that He has a watchful eye on me and I don’t need to fear. Today I am feeling a little weary and just want to walk hand in hand, side by side with Him, in silence. It’s enough for me to know that I am not alone. As you put your hand into the hand of your Heavenly Father today, may you be comforted by the fact that He is totally trustworthy and good beyond comparison. Allow Him to father you.

Prayer: Father God, many of us would have settled to know You from afar but You call us to draw near, to know You intimately. Thank You, thank You, thank You. Amen.
