Eyes like Flames of Fire

The risen Lord Jesus appeared to John. He had eyes like flames of fire (Revelation 1:14). I was in church and heard this verse being read aloud. In my spirit, I imagined the Lord looking at me. He looked right into my heart with His compassion and love. The flame brought purity and cleansing and as I looked back, my eyes filled with tears as His Spirit touched me.
As Psalm 139 says, ‘You know me, such knowledge is too wonderful for me’. He knows us intimately. He knows what we are thinking and what we are going to say. He knows our motives, and yet, as we open ourselves to Him, that look can melt us, cleanse us, convict us, reassure us and cover us with His love and acceptance. (It’s His goodness that leads us to repentance).
Whatever anyone says about us, whatever the world throws at us, whatever lies we believe and whatever we think about ourselves can all be swept away, as we come into His presence.
We look into a mirror and see ourselves. We can then go away and forget what we saw. But when we look into the Word we see Him who is Truth and we can’t forget His words. The Holy Spirit is there to remind us of what we read and hear and to bring this truth alive in our spirits.
When Peter denied Jesus and the cock crowed, Jesus turned and looked at Peter. What was that look like? Peter wept! But Jesus had no condemnation towards Peter. His look was one of compassion and He went on to restore Peter to a life of power and love in the Holy Spirit. Peter became the great Apostle who did the things that Jesus did.
When we have the Holy Spirit inside us and we’re walking close to the Lord, we can look into each others’ eyes and see Jesus. ‘We Christians have no veil over our faces, we can be mirrors that brightly reflect the Glory of the Lord’ (2 Corinthians 3:18, LB). There’s almost a transparency about us and a oneness of spirit and an inner love.
Prayer: Lord, may I continually look into Your face, Your heart, and Your Word and be changed daily into Your likeness, little by little. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
