Come to the Edge

Anyone who has been following the Lord Jesus for a while will know that, as His disciples, we ‘walk by faith, not by sight’ (2 Corinthians 5:7). Much of our Christian walk is often characterised by mystery and ‘blind faith’ – believing God, in spite of a lack of natural evidence for what we’re hoping for (see Hebrews 11:1).

I read a poem by Christopher Logue that is a beautiful picture of faith and what it may require of us:

Come to the edge
We might fall.
Come to the edge.
It’s too high!
COME TO THE EDGE!
And they came,
And he pushed,
And they flew.

Have you ever felt God was calling you to the edge with something you were facing in your life? Have you ever felt that, what God was calling you to do was just too high for you to reach, or too frightening for you to obey? Our key scripture is actually a very good example of courageous and blind faith. Jesus was passing by some fishermen, who were busy with their ordinary daily chores of catching fish. And yet, when Jesus asked them to follow Him, they left their nets – their jobs and what they knew so well – and followed Him.

There must have been something about Jesus which compelled them to obey and to become His disciples. These disciples followed Jesus daily, without a diary or schedule to give any kind of indication regarding what the next day would hold. They left their homes and their familiar lives and simply learned to follow Jesus’ lead. In the three years the disciples walked with Jesus, He trained them, and poured Himself into them, and, on the day of Pentecost, He sent His Holy Spirit to empower this group of timid, insecure disciples to ‘fly’ – to become world changers for Jesus!

God never calls us to step out in faith without He has a perfect plan in place – His good plan that will prosper us and not harm us (Jeremiah 29:11). The problem is that we look at the physical evidence, and at our own limited abilities, and from that perspective it looks like we may fall, or it’s too high to attain to. But when we decide to obey His voice, and approach the edge, He will cause us to fly – perhaps after a little push! God may be inviting you to come to the edge. Don’t be afraid. He WILL cause you to fly, and He’s there to catch you when your wings grow tired.

‘He was like an eagle hovering over its nest, overshadowing its young, Then spreading its wings, lifting them into the air, teaching them to fly’ (Deuteronomy 32:11 - MSG).

Prayer: Father, thank You that, as I walk in obedience to You, I can always be sure of Your everlasting arms underneath me. Thank You that You teach me to fly when You lead me to the edge of some of life’s challenges that You bring across my path. I trust You, Lord, and I love You!
