Come

I love it when a friend messages me and says, “Come over for coffee.” And I love it even more when I have the time and can reply, “On my way!” Of course, once I arrive, we don’t just sit in silence drinking coffee. We chat and catch up with each other’s news. We may end up going for a walk or baking a cake together, or even the rest of our families join us, and we stay for dinner, games and a late night! But it always starts with the relational invitation, “Come.”

It is a word that God uses throughout Scripture, and in the same context. It is a relational invitation - an invitation to come and see what else there is in store for us together.

I love this scripture, an invitation to come before God and reason (talk about, discuss, see both sides of the argument) together. And it’s not just reason together on how you feel or what is happening in your life. The context is in relation to our sins. God wants to talk to us about our sins, not just tell us we are wrong, but discuss them … how relational is that?

Jesus called His disciples with the words, “Come, follow me.” It was an invitation and a promise of more, together. He issues the same invitation to us, to come with our sins, to come to follow Him and see what He has for us in relationship together.

But, as with every invitation, there has to be a response and some action on my behalf. When my friend asks me to come over, I need to stop doing what I had planned for that time and go to her house. If I sat at my house and waited for her, I would be waiting a while, as the invitation was made to go there.

It makes me wonder if we can sometimes feel stuck or lonely, fed up with God because He hasn’t met us where we are at. Maybe He is issuing you with an invitation to ‘come’. But that invitation may mean leaving your own thoughts and plans, taking His hand, and following His lead. Trusting it will only ever be for our very best.
