Claiming the Moral High Ground
by David Cross
We live in an age of social media where many seek to claim the moral high ground with regard to some trending issue of apparent injustice. I suggest that, for some of us, such a position can be an effective, even if an unconscious way, of not having to face our own sinful life-choices. Jesus tells us that this moral standpoint can be dangerous spiritual territory, for such judgement of the splinter in the eyes of others may result in an opportunity for painful divine judgement of the beam in our own.
It's right to seek truth and justice in this troubled world, but we need to be very careful if we are claiming that we, together with those who agree with us, have the monopoly of righteousness on any particular issue.
Only one sinless Person has walked on this earth who could safely stand on His moral high ground and directly confront the wrongdoing of those around Him. Our safety, when challenging injustice, is maintained only as we stand in complete surrender to Jesus and in the position that He directs us to take with Him. It must never be our own moral high ground, only that which belongs to Him.
In Luke Chapter 9, we see that the disciples had to learn this lesson. One day a Samaritan village, where Jesus was heading, refused to welcome Him. In the fervour of moral indignation, the disciples wanted to call fire down from heaven to destroy the village, but Jesus simply rebuked them, for this was not at all the high ground on which He was standing.
