Jesus welcomed the people, taught them about the Kingdom of God and healed those in need. Luke 9:11

Seeds of the Kingdom

Chosen by God

by Sue Dare

“Have I not chosen you”.
John 6:70, NIV

Throughout Scripture we see that God chose people and nations to fulfil His will and purposes. From the first book of Genesis through to the last book of Revelation there are countless examples of this. For instance, God starts by choosing Adam and Eve to be ‘fruitful and multiply’ and to subdue the earth. (Genesis 1:28). Later on in Genesis we read that Abraham is chosen by God to father the nation of Israel (Genesis 18:18-19). Israel is chosen by God from among all the other nations to be His treasured possession (Exodus 19:5). Moses is chosen by God to lead the captive Israelites out of Egypt. Saul was chosen to be the first king over Israel (1 Samuel 9–10). David was then chosen to take his place, and David’s son Solomon, was chosen by God to build the Temple in Jerusalem (2 Samuel 2, and 1 Kings 5–7). Zerubbabel and Joshua the High Priest were later chosen by God to re-build it after it was destroyed (Haggai & Zechariah). Nehemiah and Ezra also had an important part to play in this. Jeremiah was chosen by God to be a prophet to the nations (Jeremiah 1:5). Esther was chosen to deliver her people from destruction in Persia (Esther 4:14), and I’m not even at the end of the Old Testament yet!

In the New Testament we read that Mary was chosen to be the mother for Jesus (Luke 1:30-32). John the Baptist was chosen by God to be ‘a voice crying out in the wilderness’ to prepare the way for Jesus and His ministry on earth (Matthew 3). The twelve disciples were chosen from among the throngs of people to walk in close fellowship with Jesus (Luke 6:13). Peter, John and James were chosen from among the twelve for special training (Matthew 17). Paul was chosen by God to be His special instrument in bearing His name before the gentiles, kings and descendants of Israel (Acts 9:15). Christians, alongside believing Jews, are chosen to be God’s people (1 Peter 2:9).

Finally there’s you and me, here on earth at this time in history, to fulfil God’s will and purposes. Hasn’t He chosen us? Yes He has! Walk confidently in the knowledge of that today. You’re not here by mistake, and God has a purpose for your life.

Prayer: Thank You, God, that You have chosen me and I’m not here by mistake! Help me to fulfil Your purpose for my life, in my generation. Amen.
