Carrying the character of Jesus

This verse is recorded during Paul’s first missionary journey at a time when he and Barnabas were finding it difficult to minister to the Jews in Pisidia. They both clearly felt that it was time to reflect again on the direction which God had planned for them. In response to the contention which was growing around their ministry, they spoke out the words of this verse which God had revealed for their lives.
It was significant that the essence of this statement of their destiny was as much about what they were to be as to what they were to do. They were to be a light to the Gentiles. Of course Jesus himself is the perfect Light, but amazingly He calls all His disciples to display something of His character. In fact this call upon our lives is the basis of our true destiny. The activities of our Christian walk are very important but they are nothing compared with the character, or fruit, which we display. Although no one individual can show to the world the fullness of Jesus, the Body of Christ on earth can reveal a great deal of His character, if we let the Holy Spirit change our hearts.
Which of the characteristics of Jesus has He particularly destined you and I to demonstrate today in this needy world? Will we display His truth, His grace, or His mercy? Will we display His faithfulness, His kindness, or His love? Like Paul and Barnabas will we display His light? Hearing God’s answer could revolutionise the rest of our lives.
Prayer: Show me, Lord Jesus, the particular aspects of your character which you want me to display today, so that I might move more into my destiny. It may mean a change of heart for me, but I want to show the world some more of You today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
