A Light for My Path
by Gemma Gardner
We have a small brown dog called Sid. He’s been with us for nearly eleven years now. Ever since we have had him, I have habitually walked into him, accidentally kicked him or tripped over him, especially in the darker evenings. My husband, Dean, has always tried to warn me if he sees I am about to walk into him, but he isn’t always watching as I move around.
Just recently I began to feel really frustrated over my repeated incidents with Sid. I have a torch that I can wear on my head, and I told Dean I was going to use it in future, when I was on the move. Dean didn’t seem too keen on that idea, and he said he would look around for a light to put on Sid. “That won’t work,” I said. “The batteries will be flat in three or four hours”. But Dean wasn’t deterred.
The next morning Dean told me he had ordered a light-up collar for Sid that could be recharged when the batteries ran down. The collar duly arrived, and Dean put it on Sid as soon as it got dark. It had LED bulbs in it and glowed bright green. I could see it easily. I was thrilled I could avoid tripping over Sid, and even more amazed when the batteries lasted for three evenings before needing an hour to recharge.
The above Scripture is so apt. God’s Word is truly a light to guide our feet and a lamp to our path. But we need to look in the right direction. With so many who question the authority of the Bible, we can easily fall into the trap of thinking we know better, and choose to go our own way that feels so right, or to follow the advice of other people who have the values of this world that go against what the Lord wants for us.
Sid’s lights warn me when he’s in my path, and God gave us His commands to warn us and keep us out of danger. If you know He is speaking to you about a certain issue in your life, don’t avoid it. He loves you and wants you to know His daily care and protection.
Prayer: Father, I thank You that You have given us Your Words in the Bible. Thank You that it will never be out of date, even though our culture and fashion will change. Please help me to listen to Your voice and heed the warnings You have put in Your Word for my safety. Help me to trust You and not rely on my own understanding. I ask this in Jesus’ Name and for Your glory. Amen.
