When the Time is Right

I have recently acquired some ‘hatching eggs’- fertilised eggs which, after incubation, should give me four lovely chicks. I have been thinking about getting some for a while, since about February, but the time was not right. A neighbour (how knows about these things) said I was better to start incubating eggs in May or June. I would have to wait.

Then lockdown came and there was no opportunity to take anything but the most essential journey. I would have to wait again. But, as lockdown eased, it seemed the time was right to purchase my eggs. But my waiting was not over. Even though I had my eggs, I still have to wait for them to develop and hatch into chicks; and after that to become fully grown chickens and produce eggs of their own.

All this waiting made me think of how impatient we human beings can be – I know I can be! I want my eggs to be chickens without the wait. But God knows there is a time for everything, a time to be an egg and a time to be a chick. God knows what is going on underneath the shell of the egg, just as He knows what is going on inside us, how and when hearts and souls are changing and yielding more to Him. He will know when the time is right to move us on to the next stage of our development. We can’t rush it, however much we want to.

Wherever you are at the moment, emotionally or physically, there is time for every season and activity under heaven. However uncertain this season seems, as is says in today’s verse, there is a ‘time for every purpose under heaven’. The purpose for my eggs at the moment is to be developing into chicks. Perhaps this is the season when God wants you to find His purpose for you during this time.

Prayer: Holy Father, help me to find Your purpose for me in every season of my life. Help me to take the right steps at the right time to become more and more the person You call me to be. Amen.
