The Power of Truth

by Ron Scurfield

They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.
John 17:16-19, NIV

Truth is not just an observation of something that is right. There’s stability, security and hope in truth. Truth is dependable. “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13)).

Truth is Spirit and is from God: “The Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me” (John 15:26). In truth we find strength, confidence and faith, emanating from God Himself, with Jesus Christ being the embodiment of all truth: “I am the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6).

So, what about all those who deny the truth and live only for themselves?

If the Spirit of truth comes from God, there is also a spirit of lies and deception. This is from the enemy, the devil and father of lies. It is the cloak worn by those who despise the truth. They cannot see what’s before them and live only for themselves, blinded by deception that has infiltrated their life. “Do not be deceived ... A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction” (Galatians 6:7).

No one is deliberately deceived. But once it takes root it distorts truth and justice. It can give the deceived a false sense of being right. And he will defend this belief, even when it flies in the face of truth. This is the seed sown by the devil which can choke the unsuspecting victim.

Jesus came to open the eyes of the blind, to show the way: “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free” (John 8:32).

There are two opposing forces battling for the souls of mankind. Ever since the fall this battle has been raging and the defeated foe is still using lies and deception to lure people into his camp.

There is no middle way. We can walk in the truth but be tempted by lies. In our ignorance we can fall for the lies of the enemy. This is why we must stay vigilant. As we continue to acknowledge the truth, the door is open for us to walk through, not looking to the right or to the left, but to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. For without faith, it impossible to see God, or even to be aware of His presence. But with faith in our hearts, kindled by the Spirit of truth we are led by His almighty power into joy, happiness, love and peace - the kingdom that has no end.

So let us lift our eyes above the temptations of the world and look only to Jesus. As we deny the enemy a foothold we will be led by the truth and upheld by the power of God. We will be guided by the Spirit and nourished by His Word, having everything we need for life and godliness.

Jesus prayed to His Father: “Sanctify them by the truth. Your word is truth” (John 17:17).
