Deep and Deeper
by Marie Gildea
Meditating on this scripture never fails to blow my mind. Being a visual person, I tend to think in pictures and with this verse I can’t! Paul is telling us that the love of Christ is huge but grasping that is not always easy. We could skim over these verses and think, yes, the Lord loves me, but it says so much more than that. Paul’s prayer is that we, the Lord’s Holy people, grasp how wide and long and high and deep is His love. It seems to me he is saying there are no boundaries to this love.
I remember once, during my degree course, I had to use a different presentation tool instead of PowerPoint. It was called ‘Prezi’. It was like a huge electronic blank canvas that just went on and on and on. No matter which way I scrolled, there was just more blank canvas. The first piece of work I ever did using Prezi got lost in the vastness, never to be found again. Even the support technician could not locate my work!
The amazing thing about this presentation tool is that it also has depth. So, you could start by typing a simple word, and then, within one of the letters, you could go deeper and type something else, and then deeper again. If ever you watch a presentation with Prezi on a big screen it can make you feel a bit giddy. It can go off in all directions, as the visual has no boundaries or limits.
This is how I see the love of Christ, like a never-ending electronic, blank canvas that is three dimensional. It does not matter which way we scroll. It is still the love of Christ! It doesn’t matter how deep we go. It is still the love of Christ. Isn’t this amazing? Paul prays that we will grasp this. He knows it is not easy for us to understand this type of love. He knows it surpasses our understanding as human beings, but he prays that we will grasp it.
I encourage you today to stop and meditate on this verse. Let’s immerse ourselves in the limitless love of Christ. Let’s grasp the vastness and let’s be giddy and rejoice!
