And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:17, NIV

We do so many different things in any particular day. Many things we do routinely, like washing dishes, cleaning, brushing our teeth, checking the mail, or shopping. They don’t seem very important, yet they must be done.

Reading today’s scripture, I was pondering how to really apply this in my life. How can I do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus? There are certain things I do which I consciously am doing in the name of Jesus, as when I’m teaching or doing prayer ministry, or even speaking a kind word to someone I see is sad and needs encouragement. But this scripture says “whatever”. This means “everything”! How do we do that?

I think the answer is in the second part of the verse, “giving thanks to God the Father through him.” So, when I am cleaning the toilet, I can be thanking Father God. Everything I set my mind to do, if I am giving thanks to God, I can do it in the name of Jesus.

As I was pondering all of this, I read a devotion based on 1 Corinthians 6:19, which says, “Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God?” They were making the point that, as we are the temple of the Holy Spirit, wherever we go and whatever we do, we are taking the Holy Spirit with us, so wherever we go, we need to think about whether that is where the Holy Spirit wants to go.

These scriptures fit together very well! We need to be aware that we have the Holy Spirit with us and then we can be thankful in all circumstances (as it says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18) and do everything in the name of our Lord Jesus.
