Right and Wrong

by David Cross

The way of fools seems right to them.
Proverbs 12:15, NIV

Seventy years ago, a High Court judge said, "The common law of England has been moulded for centuries by judges who have been brought up in the Christian faith. Its precepts, consciously or unconsciously, have been their guide in the administration of justice."

There has been a seismic societal change since that time. Ten years ago, another High Court judge said, "The courts should not try to be guardians of morality because there is no longer one definition of right and wrong.”

Today, there is indeed no common agreement on what is truth and no common agreement on what is right or wrong. The outcome of this reality is that there are no consistent guidelines for morality, and this means that the law becomes increasingly impotent and increasingly difficult to uphold.

With the rapid abandonment of our rich Christian heritage in the United Kingdom, we live in days when truth is no longer regarded as absolute but rather as a relative issue. My truth is necessarily different from your truth. How confusing and unsettling this is, not least for the younger generation, who are trying to cope with all the pressures of this changing and complex world.

Thankfully, there is of course an answer, if people are willing to accept it. Jesus offers the resolution by His being, in Himself and in His teaching, absolute and unchanging truth and righteousness. But we must remain alert to the schemes of the enemy, the spiritual ruler of this rebellious world, who will continue to try and undermine divine truth through constant promotion of futile and ever-changing ideologies in society. Let us stand firm!
