Cosmic Truths

Looking up into the darkness of the sky I’ve always been awed by the enormity of God’s handiwork. Stars that are up to four thousand light years away may be visible, but of course we can only see how they ‘looked’ in 2000BC.
Recently I watched a programme on TV about our own solar system and the tremendous diversity in the eight planets. Neptune has a liquid nitrogen lake, Mars has dust devils, Mercury has an 88-day year, Jupiter is a gas giant. God made them all, and amazingly only one is just right for us. It’s perfectly balanced and fine-tuned in every detail for human beings, God’s special creation, made in His image, to dwell on. The temperature is just right, there is life-giving water, the atmosphere is perfect for us to breath. God knew exactly what He was doing when He made our solar system and placed it in the cosmos.
All this reminds me of the well-known chorus by Graham Kendrick which says, ‘hands that threw stars into space to cruel nails surrendered.’ Somehow putting those two things together baffles me. My mind can’t quite grasp the enormous cosmic power needed for the first action, and the humility, vulnerability, and immense love needed for the second. I feel like a caterpillar trying to understand nuclear fusion!
But it seems that King David also looked at the night sky and felt something similar. He penned his thoughts in Psalm 8:3-4. ‘When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon, and the stars which you have ordained, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you visit him?’ Yes, I wonder that too.
Today we know much more about our place in the universe, and cosmologists have sent robotic rovers to far-away planets to send back scientific information and pictures to help us learn more. But none of this knowledge changes the fact that God is bigger than the biggest heavenly body. God is mightier than the most powerful cosmic storm or black hole. God is Creator of the known and the, as yet, unknown. He is almighty, eternal, sovereign, and what’s more, He loves you and came to save you.
