Stand Firm on the Rock, Christ Jesus.

by Angela Weir

“So everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts upon them will be like a sensible man who built his house upon the rock.”
Matthew. 7: 24, NIV

I thought of these words the other day when I watched huge hail stones battering down outside and saw the garden covered in white – a strange sight at this time of year when all the summer flowers are out! All morning it had been bright and sunny, and then suddenly, it clouded over and the hail came, together with thunder and lightening.

We never know what’s going to happen in our lives from moment to moment. I well remember the morning my sister rang me to say that our mother had had a brain haemorrhage and wasn’t expected to live. She was younger than I am now and the news came completely unexpectedly, ‘out of a clear blue sky’, and it shook my foundations. I wasn’t a Christian in those days.

Life seems to become more uncertain by the day: the numbers of unemployed increase, more companies become bankrupt. Where do we look for security?

There’s only one place of total security: Jesus. He’ll never change. The words He spoke, the promises He made, will stand for all time and we can confidently place our trust in Him. David recognised that. In Psalm 27:5 he wrote: ‘For in the day of trouble He will hide me in His shelter; in the secret place of His tent will He hide me; He will set me high upon a rock.’

So, no matter what’s going on around you, stand firm on the Rock that is Jesus – any other foundation is sand!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You that You are my security and my stronghold. I can trust You completely, even though everything around me seems to be in turmoil. Lord, I believe, help my unbelief. Amen.
