Set Apart for God

by David Silvester

Know that the LORD has set apart the godly for Himself; the LORD will hear when I call to him.
Psalm 4:3, NIV

Have you ever thought that our endeavour, as Christians, to live a godly life before the LORD brings about a response from the LORD? When God, by His Holy Spirit, calls us to follow Christ, He sets apart such people for Himself, to live for and fulfil His purposes.
It’s not only an honour and a privilege to be set apart for the LORD’S purposes, but it’s also a powerful place to be in. This is why the Psalmist, David, is able to continue by saying; ‘The LORD will hear when I call to Him’.

David was flawed, and capable of sin - as we all are. But it was in the times when his life was God-centred, that the LORD worked through David. The glory and praise, however, went to the LORD Himself.

We can rejoice that it’s a joy to see God at work through us, as we serve Him. But it also causes those He blesses through our service, to praise and glorify His great Name. Hallelujah! When Jesus said, ‘You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit - fruit that will last’ (John 15:16), it was so that glory goes to the Father through our fruitful service.

Yes, there are times when we need pruning, and the things of the old nature need stripping away. But look at what Jesus has said will result; ‘fruit’, ‘more fruit’ and ‘much fruit’ (John 15: 2, & 5). As privileged people, let’s call out to God to strip away ungodly things so that we can be more godly, and become more fruitful in every good work He leads us into.

Prayer: Lord, I pray that You keep me set apart for Yourself to such a degree that I am cleansed and become more fruitful for You. Thank You that You hear when I call to You, and as I minister to others they are caused to give praise to You. Amen.

David Silvester is married and has a son, two daughters and eight grandchildren. He trained as a production engineer. He then moved on to become a lecturer of engineering craft skills before being called of God in his early fifties to become a pastor of a Baptist church. He says that,"having previously experienced an amazing healing on a day others expected me to die, it came as no surprise that God directed me and my wife, Margaret, to become involved with Ellel Ministries."
