Psalm 91

“He will cover you with His pinions and under His wings shall you trust and find refuge”
Psalm 91: 4, Amp

I was gardening the other day when I heard a loud rustling in a nearby tree and I turned just in time to see a young blackbird make an undignified landing on the flowerbed underneath. It looked somewhat indignant and alarmed. The nest was too high to attempt to put it back and the parent birds were busy round the garden, so I crept away trusting they would find it. When I had a look later the young blackbird had disappeared, so hopefully it had discovered what those “flappy things” on each side of its body are for!

Psalm 91 gives us a wonderful picture of God’s protection for us. We’re totally safe when we are covered by Him, as that small bird was in the safety of the nest. God told Abram, “I am your Shield” (Genesis 15:1), and He remained faithful to that word, and has done so throughout history, as long as His people remained faithful and walked with Him.

Our protection under God has to do with our obedience. Provided we walk in righteousness before Him we are covered. It is when we sin that we open up a hole in our covering and are liable to enemy attack. God will remain faithful to His promise of protection if we remain obedient, and He will keep us safe in all circumstances, though not necessarily from all circumstances.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the wonderful way You watch over me and keep me safe. Please forgive me that I often tend to walk away from Your protection. Thank You that You are always ready to welcome me back. Amen.
