Going for Gold
by Pam Smith
Gold is a highly valued metal because of its rarity, beauty, workability and durability. Humans have mined and skilfully used it for cast objects and overlays and world currency since early times. Gold is mentioned more frequently in the Bible than any other metal, (in Bible history as well as prophecy).
God created it, and yet God’s kind of gold is different from ours and can only be likened to earth’s gold because of its precious substance and value, (as in the holy city, New Jerusalem, Revelation 21:18-26).
Gold is the most malleable and ductile of all metals. A single ounce can be beaten into a sheet of 300 square feet, thin enough to become transparent. So our faith in God can bear numerous fiery trials yet remain intact (1 Peter 1:6-8).
Great human achievements are frequently rewarded with gold, or gold overlay, in the form of medals and trophies, as in the Nobel Prize and the Olympic games. So let our faith and our works done for Christ be as gold. Let’s ‘go for gold’ and run the race for God’s kind of gold, realising that our salvation wasn’t purchased with earth’s gold values, but with the precious blood of Christ.
And when God’s gold trophies are received they will be cast at the feet of Jesus, the One to whom all honour and praise truly belongs.
"Changed from glory into glory,
Till in Heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love and praise." Charles Wesley
Prayer: Dear Lord, may we become Your trophies reflecting Your Glory to the world, just as the moon and the stars reflect the light of the sun to the earth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
