God

God is a mystery. He has always existed. He is and was and forever will be. God says of Himself simply, “I am.” ‘He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end’ (Ecclesiastes 3:11). ‘How unsearchable are His judgments, and untraceable His ways!’ (Romans 11:33). This we must accept. God is God.

The existence of God cannot be questioned. Any Christian, even if they have little understanding of the Bible, must accept the reality of God, otherwise the Bible makes no sense. If we accept that He does exist, we find the Bible is held together by His wonderful truth, interlocking and cross-referenced to make a tight knit foundation for humanity’s purpose and destiny. As we build on this foundation, a picture emerges of God’s plan for mankind.

We praise Him. We lift up His name. We recognise with thanksgiving all He is and all He has done. We know He is continually with us by His spirit, and we are thankful. Do we know His majesty, His glory, His holiness? ‘I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above Him were seraphs, each with six wings ... And they were calling out to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory”’ (Isaiah 6:1-3). “Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honour and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!” (Revelation 7:11-12). The angels in heaven know who He is. They are with Him constantly. He is worthy of their continual worship.

We may think we know Him. We acknowledge His presence. We give Him thanks and praise. But if we really knew Him, and the greatness of His majesty, we would be on our faces before Him crying for mercy. This was the situation during the 1948 Hebridean Revival. People were falling to their knees on the streets, pleading for mercy. God had come to them in all His power and glory. His holiness overwhelmed them.

Do we sell Him short? Do we pay lip service to His name and cry out when we need him? He’s bigger than this. He’s the creator of heaven and earth, and the universe beyond - and He loves us.

Let’s give Him the recognition and honour He is due. He sent His beloved son to die that we might have access into His presence. “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” Let us respond with our lives and know the true extent of this love. ‘Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.’ ‘No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him’ (1 Corinthians 2:9). He is worthy of our worship. ‘Do not fear ... for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom’ (Luke 12:32).
