Glow in the Dark

You are the light of the world – like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. ... In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
Matthew 5:14-16, NLT

From my earliest childhood, I’ve always been fascinated by things that glow in the dark. I think it first happened when I saw the luminous hands on an alarm clock. From that time on, I wanted to get some luminous paint. I was told I couldn’t have it because it was radio-active, and therefore would be poisonous. But one day, when I was thirteen years old, I was given a jar of luminous paint which was said to be non-radio-active. It was in a little clear jar and looked green in daylight, but, in the dark, it glowed blue. I was so excited as I painted lots of different things and put them round my bedroom.

Though I’m much older now, I still love luminous things, and I have quite a collection in our bedroom, much to the amusement of my husband. There’s one thing these luminous objects need, and that’s light. I make sure they get lots of it, and then they glow brightly in the dark. They won’t glow if they don’t take in light.

Jesus said that He was the light of the world, and that if we follow Him, we won’t walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. He also said that we’re the light of the world. In another place, He said that those who belong to God are called ‘children of light’.
Jesus said, “God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. ... But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants” (John 3:19 & 21).

The apostle John wrote, ‘If we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin’ (1 John 1:7).

It’s a daily challenge to keep walking in the light, not letting anything get between me and the Lord, but also, to walk in the light with others, both those who’re believers, and those who aren’t. I’m so glad that I can come to Jesus and be cleansed when I do sin.
My luminous objects only glow when it’s dark. And we can shine as Christians when we go through times of darkness. People around us can see how we react in times of crisis and trouble, and God can give us opportunities to speak of Him and how He helps us.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me Jesus to be my light. Please help me to live in His light and to walk in the light with You, and with my brothers and sisters in the Lord, so that You are glorified. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
