Where Should Our Help Come From?

There aren’t many chariots available on Amazon for early Christmas delivery!! But when we are in need, or even desperate for a variety of different reasons, we may start to look in all sorts of different places for the support we need. Many is the person I have prayed with who needed to repent  over the mistakes they made early in life, when they were doing the equivalent of ‘relying on horses and chariots’.

The Psalmist got it right when, in Psalm 121, he looked to the mountains and asked the question “Where does my help come from?” and immediately gave the answer he had found in life to be totally true and dependable, “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of Heaven and Earth.”  We don’t look to the chariots for help, but to the one who made the materials of which the chariots are made - the Creator of Heaven and Earth.

It’s so easy though, when facing tough decisions, to stretch out for whatever short-term solutions may be available – especially false comforts which we feel we need to survive the pressures – everything from spending money you haven’t got, alcohol, food, wrong relationships and whatever personal outlet you feel you need in order to survive. These things become crutches which at first we lean on and then depend on until the crutch starts to define the sort of person we are and becomes part of our identity.

What a difference there is between depending on the Lord, the Maker of Heaven and Earth, and letting who He is define our identity, in a precious relationship with Him, through which He direct our steps and shows us His way. There are many tough situations I have been in when I have seen the hand of God at work, even in spectacular ways, as He has been the Light which has enabled me to put my feet down in the footprints He has prepared for me. Chariots may seem exciting, but God Himself trumps everything and everyone, when it comes to seeking help.
