Walking into Freedom

by David Cross

I will say to the prisoners, 'Go free!' and to those who are in darkness, 'Come out to the light!' They will be like sheep that graze on the hills.
Isaiah 49:9, GNB

The defeat of Satan at the cross opened the prison doors that were constraining our lives, giving the opportunity for freedom and for restoration from all the damaging effects of spiritual captivity. It was a finished work of liberation from the vicious ruler of this world, for all those who would acknowledge Jesus as the perfect Saviour of this world.

Today the healing and deliverance ministry of Jesus is essentially the important walk, for each believer, through those open doors into the abundant life which He came to give us. When someone has lived in the twilight world of a prison for many years it can be hard to have the full understanding of how to walk, and even the courage to move at all, from what is known to what is unknown. Discarding the familiar routines and personal remnants of prison life can take time; there is a perverse comfort in hanging on to something of a long-standing identity, however wrong it may have been. We may need help from those who are able to point out the path to freedom and encourage us to shed the constraints of the past.

There is an enemy who desires to keep us in the dark, but Jesus is ready to take our hand and lead us into increasing light. He often uses those of His followers who have already walked something of this challenging pathway, to give support to those who are taking early steps. In Luke 22:32 Jesus tells Peter to strengthen his brothers once he has discovered for himself more of the pathway of faith.

Is it time for us to get moving?

Prayer: Father God, thank You that the prison doors are open. Give me clarity to see the precious way of escape and courage to leave the familiar ways of the past. I choose to walk into the fullness of my freedom and to help others to do the same. Amen.
