The Light

God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
1 John 1:5, NIV

At the moment I am following a Bible reading plan, with a goal of reading the whole Bible in two years. It’s so interesting and helpful to really grasp the meaning of God’s word. You start to join the dots, finding similar themes which crop up repeatedly.

For example, I was reading Psalm 90 this morning, and was struck by verse 8, which mentions, ‘our secret sins in the light of your presence.’

The light of God’s presence. Imagine that! It must be such a powerful light. When you look, it is mentioned many times in the Bible. He radiates light and nothing can hide or be unseen in that light. In fact, today’s verse says, ‘God is light!’ His very essence, and nature, is light.

Light is such a blessing. Think of how much prisoners kept in total darkness crave the daylight.

The sun’s light is what gives life to our planet - all our food comes from plants - either directly or via things that eat plants. Even fish eat plants (phytoplankton). And the way plants do it, is by converting the sun’s light into food (photosynthesis). If something was to stop the sun’s light from reaching plants on earth for years, we would all starve.

How precious light is. Let’s not be afraid to bring our ‘secret sins’ into God’s light. The light of His presence is a blessing. Only a few verses on from today’s verse, it says:

‘If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness’ (1 John 1:9).

That is why Jesus went to the cross, to enable us to come confidently to a loving, pure, life-giving Father, whose presence is all light.

If you come to Him, instead of hiding things from Him, He will throw His arms around you, like the prodigal son, and restore you to Himself.
