The King’s Smile
by Pam Smith
We read in Proverbs ‘When the king smiles, there is life; His favour refreshes like a spring rain’ (Proverbs 16:15), and I was reminded of it on the day of the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in England on the 29th April. There were certainly a lot of smiles on that day and it was very refreshing to see them. The happy couple smiled. The monarchy smiled. The guests smiled. The reporters smiled and all the people smiled. Even a verger (layman assistant), captured on camera, smiled as he cart-wheeled down the nave in Westminster Abbey after all the guests had left.
But there are many people who cannot smile because of their circumstances or who have pain in their hearts. A little kindness and care from someone can refresh the spirit. ‘When the king smiles, there is life; His favour refreshes like a spring rain’. Jesus, the King of kings, came to give abundant life.
People were drawn to him. The little children were drawn to Jesus. The sick and sorrowful were drawn to him. The rejected and the outcasts were drawn to him. Sinners were drawn to him. People were astonished at the wonderful words He spoke. His love, gentleness and wisdom were so disarming that they were drawn. People are still being drawn to Him today.
If we have His goodness and joy in us, people will be drawn to us, and we can share His goodness with them. May we be so full of his love that we will be like Him, and refresh those who see our smile and hear us speak His words of grace to them.
"My Maker and my King, To Thee my all I owe; Thy constant goodness is the spring
Whence all my blessings flow." (Anne Steele)
Prayer: Lord, May our lives cause You to smile upon us. We thank You for the abundant life You give us and the times of refreshing Your presence brings, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
