The Hidden Power of God in our Life.

For over fifty years of married life my wife and I have lived in houses provided with electricity from unseen underground cables. This year we moved into a house with electricity fed by an overhead cable, (which can’t be hidden).
While reflecting upon such an everyday practical matter as the supply of electricity it seemed that God was speaking a spiritual lesson into my human spirit.
There’s so much relating to our Christian life which is open for all to observe. People aren’t only looking at the way we dress and listening to the way we speak, but our manner of behaviour, the way we go about our daily occupation and employment, the church we attend, the kind of people we mix with and the kind of person we really are.
But then people might say ‘There’s something different about you. You’ve got something I haven’t. What is it?’ They’re detecting the hidden source of power, God’s Holy Spirit, living in us, although they can’t identify it. Our old sinful nature died when we were ‘born again’ into the new life. It came through faith and our response to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. We’re now ‘in Christ’, just as much as ‘Christ is in God’. We’re an integral part of the divine family, so something of the beauty of Jesus is being detected by others, even when we’re not aware of it.
When they ask ‘Why are you so content and happy?’ it’s our God-given opportunity to tell them what Jesus means to us, what He’s done for us and what He’d like to do for them too.
Jesus spoke to His disciples and said, ‘You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth’ (Acts 1:8). (He had previously set the scene that this would be after the Holy Spirit had been given to them).
Today that same Holy Spirit is in us, as followers of Jesus, and He’s able to give us the words to speak to those who are asking what it is that makes us different. Let’s be ready to boldly tell what the Lord has done for us. I’m reminded of a song:-
Let it be seen that with You I have been, Jesus my Lord and my Saviour.
Let it be known I am truly Your own, by all my speech and behaviour.
Prayer: O Lord God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit of God, thank You for all You’ve done in my life to save me, change me and empower me by Your Holy Spirit. May my whole life be a means of showing others what You can do to make a life something that speaks of You. I ask this that Jesus might be glorified. Amen.
David Silvester is married and has a son, two daughters and eight grandchildren. He trained as a production engineer. He then moved on to become a lecturer of engineering craft skills before being called of God in his early fifties to become a pastor of a Baptist church.
