The Faithfulness of God
by Sue Griffiths
I have been thinking about this passage recently. We have an old dog, and I begin to notice signs of old age creeping on her: the reluctance to walk, the look of confusion in her face sometimes, the deafness which catches her out because she didn’t hear it coming. But we all love Rosie. We just give her more care and thought as old age creeps up on her. We have to stop and wait for her to catch up with us on a walk. We keep an eye out for her in case she wanders off and forgets which way we were all going. But she is still our lovely Rosie. Nothing has changed her nature. And we and our grandchildren will be heartbroken when she dies.
The Psalms 103 (and 139) tell us that God just goes on loving us and caring about us, each one of us, right from the very first moment to the very end of our lives. He remembers making us. He knows exactly how He did it. And He knows what and who we are. He formed us. He watched over our growing. He was there at our moment of birth.
He is there, all through our lives, watching over us. And, incredibly, He just loves us! He is thrilled to see us becoming the living beings He planned for us to be. And through Jesus, we can know God deeply and intimately, and that delights Him more than anything.
He doesn’t leave us when we get old, or ill, or confused in our minds. Just as all of us in my family seem to take more care for our Rosie as she gets old, I believe God takes more care for us, His children, when we do the same - or when we have any other kind of special need. He just continues His compassion. He knows about it.
My mother died several years ago. She had become confused in her mind, but she knew Jesus. When we know God, we come alive to Him, because Holy Spirit brings God’s eternal life right into our human spirit. Our human spirit doesn’t get old. We go on inwardly coming alive in Jesus as we know Holy Spirit in us. And God’s compassion never ceases. His love goes on, just the same.
Prayer: Thank You, God, that You are my Maker. Thank You that You will never leave me nor forsake me, and that Your love and compassion for me never stops. I am totally safe with You. Amen.
