Setting Your Compass on Seeking God

Those from every tribe of Israel who set their hearts on seeking the Lord, the God of Israel, followed the Levites to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices to the Lord, the God of their fathers.
2 Chronicles 11:16, NIV

The year 2015 is quickly approaching, or may even have arrived, by the time you read this devotion. I wonder what New Year resolutions you’ve made, or are in the process of making. Many New Year resolutions will be both made and broken in 2015. It’s human nature to do so. We often begin each year with good intentions. But without the empowering of God, they quickly come to nothing. Today’s scripture really spoke to me about the resolution I need to make for 2015. We read that individuals from the tribes of Israel ‘set their hearts on seeking the Lord.’ The BBE version of the Bible says that their hearts were fixed and true to the Lord. This is the resolution I aim to go into the New Year with. Our hearts are like compasses that need to be set in the direction we want to walk in. If we don’t deliberately and purposely choose that direction, we’re in danger of walking around aimlessly. Once we’ve made the decision of ‘setting our hearts on seeking the Lord’, all the necessary empowerment of heaven is released within us to do so. Our desire to please God delights His heart and He blesses that desire with the strength and moral courage to follow though on our commitment. Remember that He’s always at work in our lives to make us both willing and able to obey His good purposes. Only a cruel God would command obedience, and then leave us to our own devices. Our God is good, and promises to walk with us every step of the way. I’m greatly comforted by that fact.

The year 2015 is a blank page before me and I’ve no idea what will be written on it. God often opens the path before us one step at a time, and doesn`t always provide a complete itinerary or road map. I’ve already set my heart on course though, and I’m trusting God to hold me steady. No matter what comes against me, or what circumstances I find myself in, I’ve decided to set my heart on seeking the Lord. What’s your resolution?

Prayer: Father God, thank You that, when I set my heart on seeking You and walking in Your ways, You strengthen me to do so. As I enter 2015, with all its potential and pitfalls, thank You for being with me. I put my hand in Your hand and proclaim that I choose You, Lord. I choose You, in Jesus’ name. Amen, Amen, Amen!
