Safe in the Rock

The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.
Psalm 18:2, NIV

A few years ago my husband and I were travelling through France on holiday. We visited various places of interest and were amazed by some of the ancient castles perched high above their surroundings, built firmly on rock.

However, in one place, at Brézé on the Loire, there was not only a château built on the rock, but beneath it, deep in the rock, there was a network of tunnels and chambers that had been dug hundreds of years earlier by people who made their dwelling inside the rock. There were separate chambers for their grain and food stores, for their animals, and places for their families to live.

As long as they remained in their dwelling place in the rock, they were completely safe from any enemies who would try to rob them or harm them. Their food and provisions were also secure, as were their children. They only became vulnerable if they decided to leave their place of safety.

For us as Christians we have a place of complete safety and security in Jesus as our Rock. But this needs to be where we dwell, the place where we remain, otherwise we become vulnerable to the enemy who wants to ‘steal and kill and destroy’(John 10:10).
Where is your dwelling place today? Jesus tells us to remain in Him and He will remain in us (John 15:4). It is not only the best place to be, it is also the safest.

Prayer: Lord, thank you that You are my Rock and my Fortress. Help me not to wander out of the place of security that I have in You. Forgive me for the times when I have done this in the past. Amen.
