Let It Go

Love is not easily offended.
1 Corinthians 13:5, NLT

There’s a recent children’s film that has a theme song in it, ‘Let it go’. It’s about a princess who has a curse on her, and things she touches turn to ice and winter. When playing, by accident, she turns her younger sister’s heart into ice and is very upset, because she really loves her. She then wears gloves, and eventually hides away in an ice palace so she can’t harm anyone. But her sister gets released from the curse and spends her time trying to reach her and release her from this curse by true love.

All through the film, runs the theme song ‘Let it go’. The princess has to face the curse and let go of the stormy past that she’s accepted as part of her life. Then she’s able to have normal relationships with those she really loves, turning winter back into summer, and melting the ice.

This children’s story has much to teach us. It speaks to me of someone who holds on so tightly to something that has offended them that it has becomes like a curse, making them cut themselves off from the people they love, seeming cold emotionally and not being able to have normal relationships.

It also speaks to me of Jesus, who through His amazing love can reveal the cause of any curse if we’re willing to forgive. We need to forgive, repent and receive His forgiveness and His enabling to ‘Let it go’.

Some have held on to offences and grudges for years, robbing them of being able to show real, unfeigned love to others, or have relationships with a unity that has nothing to hide. But if we ‘walk in the light’, we can grow in fruitfulness and blessing. As Christians we need to refuse to allow offence to take root in our hearts, and then, without being doormats in relationships with others, we can keep our hearts completely open to His love.

He breaks the power of cancelled sin, He sets the prisoner free – His blood can make the foulest clean, His blood availed for me. (Lowell Mason)

Prayer: Lord, may I be a person who doesn’t take offence at anything, but can easily let it go, because of the love You’ve set on me, in Jesus’ name.
