I Cry to You, Lord

“When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who watch over my way. In the path where I walk people have hidden a snare for me. Look and see, there is no one at my right hand; no-one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life.  I cry to you, Lord; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”  Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need; rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are too strong for me.”
Psalm 142:3-6, NIV

Our Scripture for today is from David’s cry to the Lord for help, when he was hiding in a cave to escape from those who pursued him. It could just as easily have been written by millions of people across Ukraine right now, who are being pursued by a cruel enemy that is too strong for them and is treating the people with utter contempt and with no respect whatsoever for human life.

Many have lost everything and are utterly desperate. But just as David experienced God’s protective and delivering hand upon him, we are aware of many stories emerging out of Ukraine today of believers having been supernaturally guided by the Lord to safety. God hears and answers the prayers of desperation.

David said “No-one cares for my life” – or my soul in many translations - But over the past thirty years Ellel teams have been teaching and training people all over Ukraine on how to minister healing. They were led by the Lord to translate our book on Healing from Accident, Shock and Trauma into Russian. Now it is a desperately needed handbook to healing in time of war. Right now there are many Ellel workers on the ground in Ukraine, ministering healing to people as they emerge from the humanitarian corridors and move to places of greater safety. They are totally traumatised and in shock, but God is touching the broken hearts as they cry the essence of David’s prayer for themselves and discover that we have a miracle working God.

People who don’t know the Lord are being prayed for. God is bringing healing and they are finding Jesus. It is in seasons of desperation that people cry for help. I am deeply challenged personally by how easy it is when we are enjoying a comfortable way of life to become complacent in one’s faith and lose touch with the God who lived and died to save us.

My prayer is that not only will the people of Ukraine know God’s hand upon their lives, but that the whole Christian world will be shaken into a new sense of spiritual reality as they intercede for their brothers and sisters who are on the sharp end of war in Ukraine. They need our prayers now.
