How Can All Things Work for Good?

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28, ESV

Today’s scripture is one of the most quoted verses in the book of Romans and in the Bible in general. I’ve used it quite often, and believed to be the truth from God’s Word. But I’ve been wondering how it can possibly be that all the things that happen to us - the good, the bad and the ugly - can work for good for those who love God.

Recently, I was reading through this chapter and the Lord gave me some answers to this question. All things work together for good because of how the Godhead is working together to make this happen. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are busy making even what the enemy throws at us, intending to crush us, into something good and beautiful- even though we can’t perceive it as such when we’re going through it.

We read on ‘Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words’ (Romans 8:26). The Spirit does more than just normal intercession on our behalf, but unspeakable groanings. The Father is also involved, because the Holy Spirit prays and intercedes, according to the will of the Father (verse 27). The Father Himself is for us and He’ll give us all things, for He didn’t spare His Son, but gave Him up for our sake (verse 31-32). Obviously, the Son isn’t left out of the picture. It’s through His sacrifice that we have access to the Father, but also He hasn’t finished with us yet. He’s at the right hand of the Father indeed, interceding for us (verse 34).

No wonder all things, whether good, bad or what we perceive to be the worst suffering, work for good for those who love God. God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit work hard to make it happen, by helping us in our weakness, and interceding for us, even in those hard times. This is comforting for me. As I’m writing this seed, I have different situations in my life which I look at and wonder how on earth they can work for good. But this encourages me, to know that God is working hard to make them work for good in my life. All the glory be to Him.

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, thank You that You love us so much that You work on even the hardest situations in our lives and turn them around for our good. I’m sorry for the times I’ve grumbled at what’s been happening in my life. Thank You for the way You’ve been fighting for me. In Jesus’ name! Amen.
