God Cannot Lie

by Jilly Lyon-Taylor

“God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”
Hebrews 6:18-19, NIV

On a glorious summer`s day we were walking beside the sea and saw several small boats anchored in a bay. The anchors were holding the boats secure so that they could not drift away into danger and each boat was facing into the wind and waves. This is a picture of the anchor referred to in today’s verse. It is an anchor that will stop us drifting on to the rocks of doubt and unbelief. It will enable us to meet any of life’s storms head on.

What is this anchor? It is the fact that it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore all the promises in His word are true, giving us a certain hope. People often say that there is nothing that God cannot do, but Scripture clearly states that one thing He cannot do is to lie. To do so would be completely contrary to His name and His nature. Jesus is the Truth (John 14:6), the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth (John 14:17), and God is always faithful to His promises (Psalm 145:13).

In particular, the two unchangeable things referred to in this passage by the writer of Hebrews are the blessings promised to Abraham and the multiplication of those blessings to his descendants. Scripture teaches that all those who believe are spiritual descendants of Abraham through faith, with an inheritance in God that brings a certain hope. This hope should act as an anchor to hold us secure and steadfast, even through the most severe difficulties and storms.

Are you facing problems today that are threatening to overwhelm you? Be encouraged that God will never let you down and that His promises are dependable and true, because it is impossible for Him to lie. Hold on to His word and let it be an anchor for you. In the words of the old hymn:

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift or firm remain?

We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Saviour`s love.

Priscilla Jane Owens (1829-1907)

Prayer: Lord, thank You that it is impossible for You to lie and that You will never break any of Your promises to me. Help me to hold on to the truth and let it be an anchor for my soul in the midst of any storms that come my way. In Jesus` Name, Amen.
