Faithful and Wise servant
by Pam Smith
Jesus asks this question. Who then is a faithful and wise servant? Has He put us in a place of influence and authority in some part of the church, a ministry or organisation, a home or a family? Perhaps a particular position where we can reach the lost.
The smallest responsibility is a privilege and we are doing it for the Master. And maybe in some small way we are able to feed those around us. Jesus said to Peter, ‘Feed my sheep’ and ‘feed my lambs’. What a joy to be able to do this from the provisions the Lord has given us, or from the resources available.
Some people are desperately looking for physical food, but there are many hungering for the things of the Spirit. We may be the only one the Lord has in that place or time to meet their need. Maybe He has called us into the Church ministry and we are overseeing His flock. With His wisdom and our faithfulness many will be fed. We may be called to be an overseer of a home or family. Jesus says we are blessed if when our Master returns, He finds us doing this faithfully.
He also gives a warning to those who have been given responsibilities but are using them for their own selfish gain or power, and lording it over others. Whatever positions the Lord has given us, let’s be looking for His return. When He returns He will want his faithful ones to be overseers of all His goods.
God is our provider now but can you imagine having even more access to all the unfailing riches of Jesus and the wonderful resources of our Heavenly Father to hand out? What a joy and delight!
Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
By the power of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfasthope
And my will be lost in Thine.
Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord… (Hugh Stowell)
Prayer: Lord help me to be wise and faithful in the small things and to feed those in need with the resources You have provided. Even so, come Lord Jesus, Amen.
